Sepia Saturday: Guys and Gals

Sepia Saturday challenges bloggers to share family history through old photographs.

This week’s Sepia Saturday photo is a theme-packed image suggesting bikes, flags, tents, instruments, and more.  While there are certainly lots of “things” in the picture to inspire a respectable response, it’s the implied back-story of Guys and Gals having fun that resonates with me.

I wish I knew the story behind these photos.

They were in an envelope with a lot of miscellaneous snapshots belonging to my mother.  I don’t recognize anyone, so I don’t think these are her friends from Cradock High School.  The brazen display of cigarettes suggests these are the college years.  Yet, I do not see Momma in the photos.  Perhaps they were sent by her ol’ beau at Davidson College.

Homecoming festivities?  A fraternity party?

Guys and Gals just having fun.

Aside from the crazy antics on display in these photos, the 2-images-for-the-price-of-one intrigues me.   Maybe Brett Payne will come along and tell me all about the photographic process that resulted in 2 small images on one deckle-edged photo.

Please visit Sepia Saturday to see the various and sundry ways my friends have been inspired this week.

  1. What fun pictures to have. It's too bad you don't know where or when they were taken or who is in them, but if your mother had them, the people in them obviously meant something to her. With a little luck, perhaps someone will come forward with a clue or two? You never know!

    1. Yeah, the photos must've been important - that's why I think maybe her old beau is in there somewhere.

  2. They do look like they are working hard at having fun. I have seen travel photos split into fours but the double photo is an interesting set up.

    1. 4s? Now that you mention it, in the 1970s we could get a photo with 2 smaller versions printed to the side that we could cut off and give to a friend. In that case though it was the same photo, not different images like these in my post this week.

  3. I think the photos were probably made with a half-frame camera. Here is a link to some examples of prints

    1. Ah ha -- that must be it. Some of those look much like mine with that wide black line between images. Thanks, Poscardy!

  4. Fun to guess what people were up to when you don't have any real facts to go with the photos.

    1. True -- I could be a real sneak and just make up a story and who would know??

  5. The blonde in the last picture that is sitting, isn't that Momma's friend, that ended up drowning?

    1. I wondered that myself. She has that familiar look, but I don't know.

  6. It was the combination of the guy in the grass skirt and the Patrol Car that got me going - what complete, innocent fun they all had! Fabulous photos; it doesn't even matter that you don't know any of them....

    1. You know Mr. Grass Skirt had to be a fun guy!

    1. Somebody could craft a great story, I'm sure. It won't be me.

  8. The dress-up costumes and wheel barrow suggest a Greek event for a fraternity or sorority day. The double half frame camera seems a good bet, perhaps a way of making the prints at half the price.

    1. That's what I think too. When Momma was at Shenandoah College, there was no Greek system, and when she was at Madison it was all women. That's why I think the pictures were sent to her by someone, maybe her former boyfriend at Davidson.

And good point about printing two pictures on one sheet.

  9. Certainly looks like a wild time being had by all. Sorry if that 1 drowned later on.

  10. Isn't it just maddening to know this must have been from someone or about something that meant a lot to your mom...but not enough to include the explanation?! There are all sorts of possible explanations for these photos. Just too hard to tell.

  11. Quite fascinating, especially the discussions about half frame cameras. We tend to forget in these days of digital photography that film was a very expensive item, so any scheme that would get you twice as many pictures from your film was to be welcomed.

    1. I'm glad for people like Postcardy who can educate me on things like "half frame cameras," a term I had never heard.

  12. Intriguing photographs but shows the fun people had.

  13. I have to laugh at your comment about "who would know?" My mom used to tell me that when I'd press her for details about someone's birth, death, etc. She'd always say "just make up a date, who will know the difference?" Sigh. Great photos!

  15. Oh ya. There were some crazy antics going on there in those photos. A wheelbarrow "Patrol Car" and a guy in a grass skirt. Haha. Wow. And is that one guy seems to be wearing football padding from back in the day. Interesting.

    1. I know! That football player - what a great shot! Kudos to the person behind the camera.
