Wordless Wednesday: Who Are They?

Wordless Wednesday is a daily prompt at Geneabloggers that asks family historians to create a post in which the main focus is a photograph or image.

Family possibly from Shenandoah, Page County, Virginia late 1800s early 1900s

In my continuing effort to identify faces in the many photos passed down in my family, I present yet another family whose names are unknown.   Possibly they are related to my great-grandmother Mary Frances Jollett Davis who grew up in Greene County but lived her adult life in Shenandoah, Page County, Virginia.

  1. My eye was drawn right away to the older girl. She looks so bored! I can't imagine having to pose for those old pictures.

    Happy Wednesday!

    1. HA HA - I can tell studying old photos is somewhat new for you. That's not the "older" girl - it's most likely the ONLY girl (other than mom). The plaid "bow tie" is the fashion for little boys.

  2. Wendy, their clothes are wonderful but their facial expressions are quite serious. I wonder if it was 'frowned upon' to smile in photos at that time.

    1. Love your pun. I've read a couple theories about those serious poses: (1) there was no quick and simple point and shoot, and taking the photo took a long time, so a serious look was easier to maintain, (2) bad teeth.

  3. I don't know them, but they sure are a good looking group. What a fine photo; they sure are dressed up nice. I notice their eyes the most though.

  4. I just hate it when I have a beautiful photo of a family whom I assume was/is important with no idea who they are.

    1. Me too. I hope there's a cousin out there with the key.

  5. Could have been my family so many years ago- 2 littlegirls- but I wouldn't have survived wearing a fitted dress like that...surely I would have been the talk of the town in my husband's jeans. Happy Wednesday!

  6. I just read the other comments- I thought the younger was a boy at first as my dad is in photos wearing gowns until he was 2...but the "bun" on the child's head made me think girl.

    1. Yeah, the hair definitely sends a mixed message! I don't know - maybe it is a girl after all.

  7. A lovely unknown family for sure. I enjoy the expression on the littlest girl, it's as if she's really not so sure about who is the photographer is, or what they are up to! Great photo, and who knows, possibly some day you'll discover more about it, or someone you know may remember something.

  8. Nice photo Wendy! Yes, the little girl does look rather bored. Can't you just hear her asking, "Are we done yet?" And the little one has a rather shy or almost scared or apprehensive look on her/his face.

    1. Yeah, if there had been TV, we might be wondering if that's why they look so eager to be done with the photographing.

  9. Oh, Wendy, I sympathize: you and I are both plagued with the task of discovering more on our heritage linked to a surname like Davis! Although I'm not sure whether you mean these might be Davis kin or Jollett relatives...

Sometimes, after posting my mystery photos, if I am fairly certain about a link to a specific surname, I'll go onto the various genealogy forums, find the specific surname discussion board (as well as the geographic, county board) and post a description and link back to the blog post containing the photograph.

I've had one photograph positively identified that way, and received helpful hints on a few others. Maybe that would help you find just the right distant cousin to help you out on this one.

    1. Oh, good idea about visiting a message board!

    2. Oh, I'm shameless about it, Wendy. I put my link on every appropriate board I can find! Don't assume the readers of the Ancestry.com boards also check the GenForum.com boards. And I think there are others, too...

    3. That's a great idea about linking to your blog on message boards, Jacqi. And I can beat both of you with your Davis surname - my maternal side is Martin. Sigh.

    4. Jacqi! What a fabulous idea! If you haven't done so, you should write a blog post about this.
