52 Ancestors: #4 - Lester Randall MARSH Birthday Buddy

This week’s theme is to focus on a relative who shares my birthday (not counting the year, of course).  There are five candidates, but one died at age 2, one woman didn’t live long enough for her name to appear in a census, and the others are still living.  So by default, the dubious honor goes to my third cousin twice removed Lester Randall Marsh.

One of twelve children, Lester was born to Benjamin Franklin Marsh and Alice Salisbury on May 27, 1903 in Madison County, Virginia.  He was the grandson of Peachy Lamb and Layton Marsh, and great-grandson of Lucy Walker JOLLETT and Peter Marsh of nearby Orange County.

Lester grew up on a farm.  Apparently Benjamin did not own his farm as he was listed as a “farm laborer,” rather than farmer; also the 1910 census indicated that he was NOT self-employed.

Lester’s parents and oldest brother could neither read nor write, but the rest of the Marsh children received an education, at least enough to say they attended school and could read and write.

By 1920, Benjamin was able to obtain a mortgage on a house for the family, but still he and the older boys worked for other people.  Lester and the younger children attended school.

In 1926 Lester took on a ready-made family when he married twice-widowed Bessie Mabel Floyd Meacham Anderson.  She had four daughters, but apparently Lester and Mabel had no children together.  In 1930 the family was living in a rented house on Fairview Avenue in Manassas, Virginia, where Lester was working as a house painter.

At least by 1935, Lester and family had moved to Elon in Amherst County.  Lester was a painter for the railroad, a position that commanded a respectable salary for the times at $1200 a year.

City directories indicate that Lester and Mable moved to Alexandria, Virginia between 1940 and 1947.  Lester worked as a fireman, possibly for the railroad since in 1953 he was listed as an engineer.

Mabel and Lester are buried together at Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg, Virginia.

52 Ancestors: #15 - Melinda JOLLETT Marsh

Melinda Jollett was the seventh child and seventh daughter born to James and Nancy Walker Jollett, making her my third great grandaunt.  But there’s nothing LUCKY about that number 7.

“Lucky” would mean I have found her consistently in census records.

“Lucky” would mean I have birth, marriage, death dates for Melinda’s full family line.

“Lucky” would mean I have connected with a cousin, one of Melinda’s great-great-great grandchildren.

None of that. 

I have two records.  The End.

A marriage record in Orange County shows she was born around 1800 in Orange County, Virginia and married Thomas Marsh on March 12, 1822.  Her brother Simeon served as bondsman.  Simeon and his wife Nancy Glass were witnesses.

So it seems logical that I should find a family for Thomas Marsh in 1830.  Nope.  1840?  Nope.  I suppose they could have been living with another family.

Perhaps they left the area in the mid-1830s along with brother Simeon and sister Clarissa. But I see no signs of it. 

In 1850, TA DA – the rather large Thomas and "Melindey" Marsh family had settled in Putnam County,  then Virginia but now West Virginia since the Civil War.  Seven children. 

In my family tree database, every one of those seven children offers multiple “shakey leaf” hints, but only two offer more information than the projected birthdates gleaned from the 1850 census.  It looks like Thomas and Melinda and five of the children were simply wiped off the face of the earth before 1860.

52 Ancestors: #12 - Elizabeth JOLLETT King

James and Nancy Jollett were on a roll with those daughters.  Number 4 was Elizabeth Jollett, born about 1796 in Orange County, Virginia.  The little bit of her life that remains on record can be found in 3 census records, a listing in a marriage register, and a death record.

On May 20, 1822, James signed permission for young Elizabeth to marry Reuben King. Her brother Simeon served as witness and bondsman.

Now Reuben is an enigma.  As unlikely as it sounds, the name “Reuben King” was as popular as John Smith.  A search for the name finds a large number of Civil War records for ol’ Reuben, but it is highly unlikely that they could be THIS Reuben’s records.   He would have been much too old to serve. 

In 1810 there is a Reuben King listed as head of household in Rockingham County.  A marriage record dated 1809 in Rockingham for the union of Reuben to Anna Sipe suggests this is the family.  But that marriage predates the 1822 marriage of Reuben and Elizabeth.  

OK, Elizabeth could be a second wife.  A much younger second wife.  It happened all the time when a widower needed someone to step in and care for his children.

However, there is no evidence that Reuben was widowed or that Elizabeth became stepmother to the large number of children in the King family of 1820.  

In 1830, back in Orange County where Elizabeth’s parents lived, the ages and gender of James’s household suggest there could be a son-in-law and grandchildren there.  But the numbers do not match the 1820 Reuben King family.  Perhaps that family was old enough to be on their own and he was starting over with Elizabeth.  Or this is an entirely different Reuben King.

Sometime after 1830, I believe Reuben King dropped out of the picture either by desertion or death.  In the 1840 Greene County, Virginia census, the ages and gender of the 5 members of the household fit James Jollett (70-80), Elizabeth King and her sister (females 40-50), and their respective daughters (20-30).   No Reuben King in the state of Virginia.

In 1850, Elizabeth King was head of household in Greene County, probably in the house she grew up in, maybe taking over when her father passed away.  Living with her were her daughter Columbia, future son-in-law Thomas Marsh, and a sister and niece.

In 1860, the 76 year old Elizabeth, who could neither read nor write, was living in the household of Thomas Marsh, husband to her daughter Columbia.  Elizabeth now had one grandson whose name appears first as “E T.” 

By 1870, Thomas had moved the family to Rockingham County.  Elizabeth was still with him, Columbia, and the grandson “Elliott.”  Also in the household is someone named Susan Jolliffe.  Even if that is a miss-hearing and misspelling of Jollett, I don’t know who it is.

In 1878, Elizabeth’s death was reported by Frances Jollett who is listed as her granddaughter.  I believe Frances was actually a niece, not a granddaughter since Thomas and Columbia had no other children besides Elliott.

52 Ancestors: #9 - Lucy Walker JOLLETT MARSH

One of the silly games I sometimes play is “Which ancestor has the most researchers?”  Thanks to my former Geocities website, my blog, message boards, and family trees posted online, I have “met” a number of cousins who share my desire to figure out this whole Jollett puzzle.  Winning the race by a LARGE margin is the family of today’s subject. 

The oldest daughter of James and Nancy Walker JOLLETT was Lucy Walker.  On March 24, 1806, James gave his consent and provided surety for his 14-year old daughter to marry Peter Marsh, who was nearly twice her age.  They were joined in marriage by William Douglass, a Methodist minister. 

Peter and Lucy wasted no time starting their very large family.  While I have 8 children listed, the 1820 Orange County, Virginia census indicates there could have been more that Marsh researchers have not confirmed.  However, it is also possible Peter and Lucy shared their home with another family.

For some reason, I’ve always viewed Peter Marsh as one of the “movers and shakers” of his day.  Maybe this impression is due in part to the large land holdings he inherited in 1818 when his father died.  Thomas Marsh named his son Peter as the executor of his estate which included a farm in Northumberland County on the Northern Neck of Virginia.  There is still a large Marsh presence there today.

Like his father-in-law, Peter Marsh signed the 1838 petition to form Greene County, ensuring the citizens of the western portion of Orange County would have easier access to a court. 

By 1850, all the Marsh children were grown and gone.  Some moved to neighboring counties, primarily Rockingham, Madison or Albemarle.  Others left the state altogether heading to Tennessee, Texas, and South Carolina. 

Peter must have died between 1850 and 1860 since he was no longer listed in a census.  Lucy Walker Jollett Marsh, however, appeared in both 1860 and 1870 living with her daughter Amanda and son-in-law George Sampson.  Lucy could neither read nor write. 

Lucy died October 25, 1870, in Stanardsville, the county seat of Greene, the county her husband, son, and father helped form by signing the petition.

A to Z April Challenge: T is for Tabatha

This is Day 20 of the A to Z April Challenge.  My theme is women with unusual names although I must cheat now and then or I’ll have a name and no story.

is for Tabatha.  I always thought “Tabatha” was a new name invented by the writers of “Bewitched.”  Do you remember Tabatha?  She was the witchy daughter of Samantha and Darrin Stephens.

So I was surprised to learn we have a VERY OLD Tabatha in the family, specifically Tabatha Jollett of Greene County, Virginia.  Gathering her complete story is difficult.  If her name is on a will, a deed, a marriage or death certificate, I have not found it.  She appears by name in only two census records.  In 1850 Greene County, she is listed as 50 years old, living with Elizabeth (Jollett) King (54), Thomas Marsh (34), Fanny Jollett (28), and Columbia King (25).  No relationships are indicated.

In 1860, Elizabeth was living with Thomas and C.A. Marsh, so it is safe to assume that Columbia was her daughter, and now Thomas was her son-in-law.  “T” (age 63) and “FEA” Jollett (age 39) were on their own in Greene County.  So likely Fanny was Tabatha’s daughter. 

The question then is whether Tabatha was Elizabeth’s unmarried sister with a child out of wedlock or possibly a sister-in-law.  If she had married a Jollett boy, the only candidate would be James Jr. who left in the early 1830s headed for Indiana with his sister Clarissa and brother-in-law John Sampson.  However, James claimed he never married.  But if he deserted his wife and child, he might have lied too.

Looking at the 1830 and 1840 census records for James and Nancy Jollett, Elizabeth’s parents, Tabatha and Fanny could very well have been living in the household.  The numbers fit:

Either way, it fits for Tabatha to be a daughter or abandoned daughter-in-law.

Now there is one more piece of weirdness to confound the question:  When Elizabeth King died, her death was reported by “Fanny Jollett, granddaughter.”  That makes no sense at all.  That has to have been a recording error.  Fanny might have been Elizabeth’s niece, but certainly not her granddaughter.

A to Z April Challenge: M is for Marsh

This is day 13 of the A to Z April Challenge.  The half-way mark!

is for Marsh.  Two of my earliest Jollett women married Marsh men.  I do not know if the men were related, but definitely the two women were sisters, daughters of James and Nancy Walker Jollett of Orange County, Virginia. 

One of the benefits of online research is contact with cousins and sharing information.  The number of descendants doing research on the line of Lucy Jollett Marsh is plentiful.  It requires pages upon pages for me to print simply names and dates of Lucy's line.  However, poor ol' Melinda Jollett Marsh's line can be printed on a single page.  Where are the Melinda researchers? 

Sometimes I sit and puzzle over the unbalance in genealogy, why some lines are overrun with descendants duplicating research while other lines are ignored.  Maybe the genealogy gene just didn't get passed along in Melinda's line.
