Wordless Wednesday: Men of the Eastwind #10

Wordless Wednesday is a daily prompt at Geneabloggers that asks family historians to create a post in which the main focus is a photograph or image.

Unknown sailor on USCGC Eastwind 1946 or 47 http://jollettetc.blogspot.com

When my dad was stationed aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Eastwind in 1946-47, he took pictures of his shipmates during tours to Thule, Greenland but didn’t provide names.  Maybe the family of these sailors will find my blog and share their story.

  1. This is a curious picture to me. Do you suppose he is scraping and cleaning the side of the ship? You can see the water and he appears to be on the outside of the ship. I know someone who told me he had spent a big part of the time his navel ship was out to sea, scraping the sides of the ship. It's pretty cool that your dad documented so much.

    1. There are several pictures of men scraping or scrubbing. I wonder what they were standing on.

  2. Hey! That's a great question that Michelle asked. Just what is that sailor standing on? Interesting!

    1. I have one idea: a smaller boat?? Among the photos in my dad's scrapbook are several photos of small open-air boats that look like a way to get from a ship to land.

    1. Yeah, I'm sure. My dad said it was the coldest place he had ever been.
