Sepia Saturday: OMG

Sepia Saturday challenges bloggers to share family history through old photographs.

This week’s Sepia Saturday prompt is an ad for Osh Kosh overalls.

Nothing says “Osh Kosh B’Gosh” like these girly overalls:

Catherine Barany and friend
Aunt Cat on the left
Unidentified friend - and she's probably glad of it!

That’s a friend of my great-aunt Catherine Barany sporting the striped overalls-esque jumpsuit, which definitely falls into the category of “what was she thinking?”

Oh My Gosh!

When I first saw this photo, I wasn’t sure if I was looking at a man or woman.  But once my eyes got adjusted, I noticed the bra-style top (which could have benefited from some built-in support, by the way).

The jumpsuit was not a new phenomenon, having been worn by women in the factories as early as 1913.  But the style caught on as a high-fashion must-have in the 1930s and 40s.  Evidently Cat’s friend was right in style, especially with her matching shoes.

Overall, there’s more to see at Sepia Saturday.

PS - Some readers of last week's Sepia Saturday entry about the swimming hole asked for more information about how Naked Creek got its name.  Read the update HERE.

    1. Yep - I guess some people could pull it off. She couldn't.

  2. What a fabulous photograph. Certain days, certain fashions, certain styles should be preserved in aspic and viewed from 70 years in the future. this was one such day.

  3. wow, that is an outfit! Probably really cool in back in the day. I wonder if Aunt Cat owned a pair?!

I still have Joel's Osh-Kosh that Carol Johnson gave him size 6 months =)

    1. I'm sure I don't have any of the girls' Osh-Koshes.

  4. I have a friend who used to refer to these as "overhauls" and I think this might be an apt term for the striped job on the unidentified friend. She could use a bit of a makeover as you point out, but on the positive side the garment itself looks well constructed..the stripes on the pockets match the stripes on the pants. Too bad she's got $10.00 worth of change packed into them for a secondary sag.

    1. Ha -- I hadn't paid attention to the pockets, but you're right!

  5. Just stopped by your website. I've been a member of GeneaBloggers for just over two months. This is a great community of bloggers. My blog gives me a chance to post some of the research "I've been sitting on" to use your words in about me. I'm retired and working harder than ever on several family history projects.

  7. Wendy, splendid! she looks very out there in her striped pants with bib, these were just recently again in vogue but with "hot pants". I think my granddaughter was wearing a pair in blue jeans style!

    1. I had forgotten all about the overall-hot pants!

  8. I wonder if she made the overalls herself. If so there is probably a pattern somewhere.

  9. It is a great shot, but I don't think the overalls were that bad looking, really. They sure were comfortable too, as I recall.

  10. I think the overalls were semi-cute - if only they didn't fit better. Just a little adjustment here and there would have helped.

  11. They look pretty comfy to me. Especially the no constriction part in the bib section.

    1. Maybe so, but having to nearly completely undress to go to the bathroom would make me not want to wear it.

  12. Wow. That is quite the outfit. I bet she made it herself. She was probably quite proud to have her photo taken. I wonder where I can get the pattern? ha!

    1. There are plenty of people with Etsy shops specializing in vintage patterns. I bet if you look really hard ....

  13. Osh, Gosh, They Flop? Such a funny picture! I wore striped men's overalls in high school.

  15. Uh, ya, she's probably very glad she's not identified in this photo. And hey, that outfit is SO fabulous, who WOULDN'T want to have matching shoes. They quite complete her ensemble. (Wouldn't it be funny if there was a matching purse too?)

  16. Very funny. We should have have a stripey theme one day. Or ugly shoes,

  17. Not being an expert on striped overalls I will refrain from making comments on both the stripes as well as on the wearer. It is a pity the stripes and the shoes take away all the attention from your great-aunt Catharine. And she is one charming lady!

  18. Not every woman could (or should I say would?) wear an overall/jumpsuit like that! Can you tell the year from the license plate?
