Recently I expressed my shock and surprise that one of
the local chapters of the DAR suggested I look elsewhere. They weren’t really being mean or snobbish. In fact, they were trying to be nice saying I
should look for a chapter closer to home.
And I might have found it.
It’s the Fort Nelson Chapter in Portsmouth, Virginia,
just a couple miles away. I emailed the
Registrar and she responded via EMAIL within the hour, unlike the
other club that responded by SNAIL MAIL over a week after my inquiry. I’m feeling better about this group of women
already.
And the woman who responded is named Pam. PAM! Not
Mildred or Hazel. PAM. She doesn’t sound like somebody’s
great-grandmother.
So Mary Jollette and I are scheduled to meet with her
next week. It’s a preliminary meeting
ahead of the start of the new DAR year. I
think the point of this first meeting is to see if we even have a prayer, to go over how the organization works, and see what kind of contribution we might make. Pam
wants us to bring whatever work we’ve done to prove our connection to Leonard Davis, a proven patriot.
Then we’re invited to the first meeting of the year on
October 4. The meeting includes a
social, a lunch, and a program.

It sounds as though it could be the start of great things.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I think!
DeleteHurray! Progress!! Good luck with your meeting next week. Oh, and that house is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteIt really is a pretty clubhouse. It's on the National Register for Historic Properties.
DeleteGood luck! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm needing it!
DeleteI can't wait to hear how it goes. I've been discouraged in my quest so I'd like to see it go well for someone - maybe that will get me motivated to finish work on my application. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAre you having trouble getting records? That's what I worry about.
DeleteYes, in some cases. What I've had the most trouble with, though, is getting a DAR member to help guide me through the process. Although I will say I gave up and haven't tried again for a few years.
DeleteI need to take the plunge and crank out that DAR paperwork, myself. Looking forward to hearing how it goes for you, Wendy.
ReplyDeleteI'm gathering my records from present to past. I dread the day I hit a major stumbling block.
DeleteThis all sounds very interesting. I have seen several distant relatives that have applied for a membership in the DAR.
ReplyDeleteLet me know how it goes.

Oh you'll hear about it alright! Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteWell, I am nervous and I hope it is easier than we think. This was always something Momma wanted to do, and here we are because of all your hard work. You are the man-or should I say you are the Daughter. LOL
ReplyDeleteChris should go with us!
I think other people don't know their line. We know that much. Getting dates and then proof for the early ones will be the trick. We don't even know where some of them are buried.
