Wordless Wednesday: Gone to the Dogs #17

Wordless Wednesday is a daily prompt at Geneabloggers that asks family historians to create a post in which the main focus is a photograph or image.

Dog on the USCGC Eastwind 1946-47 http://jollettetc.blogspot.com
It seems the crew of the USCGC Eastwind
had a number of dogs on board in 1946-47
when my dad was in the Coast Guard.

Counting down the number of photos of dogs in my collection

  1. I hope the dog didn't suffer from sea sickness!

    1. Eww -- now that would be horrible for everyone, not just the poor pooch.

  2. Haha the thought of a seasick dog is SO GROSS. I'm sure it happens, but ick!
That is a pretty cool picture though :)

    1. More than you know! But most are too similar to post. I'm winding down, so stay tuned for the big finale. HA HA

  5. I wonder if having dogs around made life feel a little more normal and a little less military? It's funny to think they took them along, made time to feed and care for them and even made a point to take their pictures.

    1. Seeing a dog on board shatters my view of military life. I have read that having a ship mascot was quite common.

  6. With all those photos of dogs, it makes me wonder what thoughts went through your dad's mind, every time he saw those pictures and remembered? Would love to know the kinds of thoughts he and the crew had, triggered by memories of their pets on board.

    1. You know how this story ends -- I saw my dad's scrapbook ONE time MAAAAAANY years ago and had no interest. I remember him talking and laughing about the dog named Skunk, and I remember him talking about how cold it was in Greenland. The End. My dad was a talker, but he did not share much about his own life. He'd repeat a story if it was funny.

    1. I suppose so -- they surely got lots of attention.

  8. He looks like a cute dog, maybe a puppy. It's hard to imagine having dogs on a ship. There probably wasn't any problem with fleas but I should think the housebreaking would be a bit difficult, especially to manage the waste. I'm sure they were a comfort to the sailors, though.

    1. OK, now you're making me think about things I don't want to think about. LOL
