52 Ancestors: #2 - Elvis, No Not That One

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small has issued a challenge:  write one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor.  It can be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem – anything that focuses on one ancestor.

Amy is a funny girl.  Her Week 2 theme is “King” to coincide with the birthdays of Elvis “The King” Presley and Martin Luther King, Jr.  Her more serious side also offers the option of writing about an ancestor who fled from an oppressive king or about our own connection to royalty.  *Snort.

No royal distinctions in this family (although quite a few have been a royal pain in the AHEM!).  Surprisingly I found in my database three males name Elvis.  All three died young, one at birth.

One was given a most grand name:  Elvis Sturdivant SHIFLETT.  He was the son of Calvin and Elizabeth Herrin Shiflett.   Born in 1860 in Albemarle County, Virginia, Elvis was just a young boy when his father, a Confederate deserter, was captured and executed just a few days before the end of the war.  According to family lore, the soldiers had deserted because they lacked food and horses.  It is not clear whether they were captured by Union soldiers or the Confederate Home Guard charged with rounding up deserters.

The prisoners were held in the basement of a house in Boonesville, and Elvis’s mother regularly took food to the prisoners.  One day as Elizabeth was heading there with food for her prisoner husband and his comrades, she heard the gunshots.  Apparently some of the soldiers had escaped; Calvin and one other were executed in retaliation.

One of the prisoners who managed to escape was Tom Frazier, my first cousin four times removed.  After Calvin died, his widow Elizabeth took up with Tom.  So what does this have to do with Elvis?  Tom had a half-sister named Columbia Frazier.  She and Elvis married in April of 1881 in Greene County, Virginia.  That means Elvis’s mother was also his sister-in-law.  But sadly, Columbia died just three years later.

Elvis was one of many Shifletts who intermarried with the Fraziers.  A year after Columbia died, on the 7th of June 1885 Elvis married his wife’s cousin Polly Jane Frazier, also my first cousin four times removed.  Elvis and Polly Jane had seven children.  Most of them managed to marry Fraziers too, some of them more than one.

Elvis died before 1900, not even 40 years old.  Whether it’s poor spelling, poor transcribing, or hiding from the census taker, it looks as if Elvis managed to stay out of the census records after 1860.

52 Ancestors: #46 - Joshua SHIFLETT

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small has issued a challenge:  write one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor.  It can be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem – anything that focuses on one ancestor.

For a long time I just assumed that my 4X great-grandfather Joshua SHIFLETT was the brother of another of my 4X great-grandfathers, Jacob SHIFLETT.  After all, they were contemporaries; they lived near one another; they appeared together as witnesses in a number of legal documents.  But another descendant of Joshua has presented a stronger argument that Joshua was the son of Thomas, thus making him the brother of Jacob’s father John, and therefore Jacob’s uncle.

So I’m going with that unless I can prove otherwise.

Joshua was born in Albemarle County, Virginia about 1774 and remained there his entire life.  On August 22, 1797, he married Melinda BRUCE, daughter of Richard BRUCE and Caty WHITE.  They raised at least three confirmed children but perhaps more.  The 1820 census for Fredericksville Parish in Albemarle shows a family that I expect to see:

MALES
1 10-15 – possibly Isaac
1 16-25 – possibly a son-in-law Michael Shiflett
1 45+ – Joshua
FEMALES
2 under 10 – possibly children of Minerva and Michael
2 16-25 – Minerva and Melissa
1 26-44 – Melinda

But in 1830, the family is more difficult to pinpoint:
MALES
2 5-9 – ?  Who are these children?
1 20-29 – Isaac
1 60-69 – Joshua
FEMALES
1 15-19 – ?  Who is this?
1 50-59 – Melinda
1 female slave 36-54

52 Ancestors: #45 - Richard BRUCE

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small has issued a challenge:  write one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor.  It can be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem – anything that focuses on one ancestor.

My 5X great-grandfather Richard BRUCE is a bit of a puzzle.  (But aren’t they all?)  He was the baby of the family born to George Bruce and Elizabeth Quinn in 1754.  He was surely old enough to have served in the militia during the Revolutionary War, but I have found no evidence of that on Fold3.  However, his brothers served and received pensions.

Richard must have been a smart man who earned the respect of his family and neighbors.  He might have been a lawyer, in fact.  He was asked to seek the aid of Thomas Jefferson in settling a military claim:

Richard Bruce 1791 letter to Thomas Jefferson http://jollettetc.blogspot.com
on Ancestry.com
used by permission from mrtsix3

Albemarle 12th Dec 1791
Sir,
Having repeatedly experienced favors of this kind from you it emboldens me still to intrude further on your goodness.  David Owings & David Wood have got some military claim sent on by the Assembly to Congress to have them settled.  And they have wrote to Mr. Madison to lay them separately before Congress.  And as I was in some measure the instigation of their not being paid as you will see by the papers therefore beg you to be so good as to try to get them settled when they come to hand [not sure that’s what it says] and write me word their fate.

I am Sir your most obt [obedient] servant
Richd Bruce

In 1794, Richard’s brother William and his wife Ann Nancy, who were residing in North Carolina, appointed him to be their attorney to sell 300 acres of land in Albemarle [Deed Book 1, p. 34].

There are many deeds and other documents witnessed by Richard Bruce; however, quite often the date is many years after the 1813 death date that seems to be accepted by Bruce researchers.  His absence in the 1820 census makes that date seem probable.  Still, the deeds between Richard Bruce and Joshua Shiflett, the husband of Richard’s daughter Malinda, make me wonder whether he was still living beyond 1813 or if there is another Richard Bruce, a son perhaps, or a nephew.

The rest of Richard’s life can be summed up with statistics from the early census records for Albemarle County in Virginia:
  • 1782 – one free male above 21; owned 8 cattle and 5 horses; had no carriages, billiard tables, or license to operate an ordinary
  • 1790 – one white male over 16; 2 blacks over 16; owned 2 horses but no carriages
  • 1800 – 2 white males over 16; 2 blacks over 16; 2 blacks between 12 and 16; owned 3 horses but no carriages
  • 1810 – 3 males under 10, 1 male 16-25, 2 males over 45, 2 females under 10, 2 females 26-44, and 7 slaves

52 Ancestors: #35 - The JARRELLS

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small has issued a challenge:  write one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor.  It can be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem – anything that focuses on one ancestor.

My 3X great grandmother Mary P. JARRELL managed to accomplish something few of my oldest ancestors couldn’t:  she had family who provided a tombstone that could survive the trampling of cattle and loss of cemeteries.

Mary P. RUCKER 1791 - 1871 Rockingham County, VA http://jollettetc.blogspot.com

She was the wife of John Frank RUCKER and mother to five children.  Other than some dates, I know little about Mary since my research has thus far been limited to online sources.  At Ancestry.com, many Rucker researchers claim Mary was the daughter of Daniel and Mary Terry Jarrell.  However, there is no supporting evidence.

In fact, there is significant supporting evidence that those researchers are just wrong.  A website dedicated to the Jarrells and related families provides thorough research as well as documentation.

Here is where that research differs from the common view on Ancestry:
  • Daniel Jarrell was not married to Mary Terry.  He was married to Mary DAVIS, as proved by the wills of James Davis and Benjamin Davis II as well as a number of records that support this close Jarrell and Davis connection.
  • MY Mary Jarrell was not the daughter of Daniel and Mary.  Their daughter Mary married William Humphreys.

Searching through the siblings of Daniel Jarrell leads to the conclusion that MY Mary wasn’t a niece either.  All the Mary Jarrells and their husbands were present and accounted for.

The fact that Mary and John Frank were married in Madison County puts them in the neighborhood of this family of Jarrells.  After all, the Jarrells and Ruckers shared property lines, served together in the Revolutionary War, intermarried, bought land from one another, and supplied witnesses for countless records.

So who was Mary’s family if not Daniel’s or his brothers'?

One possibility is that she was part of the Fitzgerald family who also lived in Madison County.  They were a totally separate family unrelated to the Jarrells.  However, a number of proven Fitzgeralds used the name Jarrell or Garrell interchangeably with or instead of Fitzgerald.  The often-used spelling “Fitzjarrell” and “Fitzgarrell” makes it easy to see how that could happen.

This quirky name game was evident in my 4X great grandmother’s experience.  Mary “Polly” SELF was married to Eason Fitzgerald in January 1802 in Orange County.  What became of Fitzgerald is unknown – he might have died or Polly might have left him (or him her).  Being legally unavailable might explain why during her time with Jacob Shiflett she was a common-law wife known as Polly Garrell/Jarrell.

Fitzgerald names that need investigating include James, Thomas, William, Stephen and Lewis.

52 Ancestors: #29 - July Ann Catherine SHIFLETT Lamb

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small has issued a challenge:  write one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor.  It can be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem – anything that focuses on one ancestor.

My third great grandaunt July Ann Catherine Shiflett was the baby of the family born to Jacob Shiflett and Polly Jarrell in July 1828.  When her father prepared his will prior to his death in 1841, Jacob made special provisions for his unmarried daughter:  $100 over and above what was to be divided equally among all the children.

Six years later in 1847, though, July Ann married Pemberton Lamb.  Aren’t those fabulous names?  I always thought “July Ann” had a great Southern ring to it, but more often than not, census records spell her name “Julia Ann,” so I have to wonder what her name really was.

In the 1850 census, there were no children.  Pemberton was a farmer, but he reported no land value, so probably he did not own his own farm at that time.  In 1860, the household boasted one daughter Melissa Ann, age 10.  July Ann’s widowed brother Madison and his children were there too, but apparently only temporarily since Madison was enumerated a second time several months later in his own home.  In 1870, three children were named in the census, and no one in the family could read or write.  Pemberton was still a farmer but with no land value reported.

By 1880, July Ann and Pemberton’s status must have improved somewhat.  While they didn’t report any land value in the census, Pemberton’s report on the non-population agricultural schedule paints a different picture, although it’s not a glowing report by any means.  He worked only 15 acres of land while 100 acres remained unimproved.  By contrast, his neighbors farmed 30-100 acres.  He estimated his farm, with its fences and buildings, was worth $200 and livestock worth $75; he did not report on the value of machinery and tools.

In the 1900 census, July Ann and Pemberton were “empty nesters.”  She reported having had 15 children, but with only 3 surviving.

In July 1902, July/Julia Ann applied for a widow’s pension.  Pemberton died that same month from some unreadable condition of the bladder.  Julia Ann was living alone and had no form of income; she also claimed to own no land.  Pemberton had served in the 7th Virginia Regiment Kemper’s Brigade, Pickett’s Division under Longstreet’s Command.  So evidently he saw the horror in Gettysburg.

Since Julia Ann Lamb’s name does not appear in the 1910 census, she apparently had died by then.

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small has issued a challenge:  write one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor.  It can be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem – anything that focuses on one ancestor.

My third great-grandaunt Virenda Jane SHIFLETT was the fourth child and first daughter of Jacob Shiflett and Polly Jarrell.  She was born about 1821 in a section of Orange County, Virginia that later became Greene.  Like her brother Burton Shiflett, she married a Frazier:  Michael P. Frazier, more popularly known as “Miley.”  Miley was a younger brother to Burton’s wife Nancy and to Leland Frazier, the one who stabbed Burton to death in 1860.

While that story about Leland and Burton might be rather shocking, it’s just business as usual for the Frazier men, it seems.  My 94-year old cousin remembered Miley as a real character.  According to one story, he used to ride his horse through the house.  That sounds pretty bad, but read on.

One time Miley woke his nephew John Conway Shiflett because it was his turn to put the coals and wood on the fire. No gentle nudge. No calling out, “Hey, get up!”  No. Miley threw hot coals in Conway’s bed. The two of them started fighting and didn’t stop until the bed burned down to the springs.  They put the fire out and then resumed fighting.

Probably the worst tale of Miley Frazier concerns Virenda Jane.  Supposedly a man calling on the Fraziers one day found Virenda hanging by her heels from the rafters.

Even though I’ve heard that story many times from different people, I don’t know whether to believe it.  However, it’s actually believable given Miley’s reputation.  He was known to be a terror to Greene County for years.  Ironically, for one who got into lots of fights, he was not a very good fighter; he was nearly disemboweled once.

Poor Virenda Jane – she really had her hands full.  I don’t know the date of her death, but I hope she lived at least until 1902 when Miley, well into his 90s, finally had himself baptized.

52 Ancestors: #27 - Madison SHIFLETT

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small has issued a challenge:  write one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor.  It can be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem – anything that focuses on one ancestor.

James Madison SHIFLETT, my third great granduncle, was either the first or second son of Jacob Shiflett and Polly Jarrell.  The ages of Jefferson Shiflett as reflected in census records and obituary suggest he was the first born.  However, Jacob’s will lists Madison first and Jefferson third; whether the list was intended to be chronological is not clear.

Unlike his brother Jefferson, Madison stayed close to home.  In 1836, he obtained a land grant for 59 ¾ acres next to his father’s land in a section of upper Orange County that two years later became Greene County, Virginia.

In 1844, Madison married Lucinda SHIFLETT.  They had at least 4 children, but sadly they just didn’t seem to stick.  One died as an infant; one was shot and killed as a teenager; one simply disappeared after the 1860 census.  However his daughter Rebecca managed to live a long time, marry, and produce plenty of grandchildren.

Apparently by 1860, Madison was already a widower.  In June he was enumerated along with his three children living with his brother-in-law and sister, Pemberton and July Ann Catherine Lamb.  In August, Madison was enumerated again, but this time he was on his own living with his children next door to his mother Polly Jarrell and brother Burton.

In 1870, the 60-year old Madison married a 25-year old Parrenia Herring.  As creepy as that sounds today, those obvious May-December marriages were very common.  They had one daughter.

 Three Generations:

James Madison SHIFLETT ( 1809 Orange Co, VA – May 1887 Greene Co, VA ) & m1) Lucinda SHIFLETT (1819 –  Before 1870) 13 Dec 1844 Greene Co, VA ; & m2) Parrenia HERRING (1845 - ) 3 Jul 1870 Greene Co, VA

52 Ancestors: #26 - Burton SHIFLETT

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small has issued a challenge:  write one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor.  It can be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem – anything that focuses on one ancestor.

Week 26 - it's the halfway point in the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks Challenge.  Half a year already??

Burton Shiflett and Nancy Elizabeth Frazier were my third great-grandparents, just one of MANY couples created by the intermarriage of Shifletts and Fraziers of Greene County, Virginia.  In fact, one of Nancy’s brothers married one of Burton’s sisters.

While there was a lot of love between the two families, there was also a lot of fussin’ and fightin’ and feudin’.  Probably nothing changes the family dynamic quite as dramatically as killing one’s own, and that is exactly what happened in October of 1860.

Nancy was made a widow at the hand of her oldest brother, Leland Frazier (aka Leland Shiflett).  Ironically, in 1840, Leland Frazier was a member of the Committee of Vigilance for Greene County.  The purpose of such groups of private citizens was to maintain law and order particularly where local government was inadequate, which seems to have been the case in Greene having been established for only two years.

Yet twenty years later, Leland stood indicted for the murder of his brother-in-law, Burton Shiflett.  He pleaded “Not Guilty.”  While I have not found the motive, the means was stabbing.  It took several days for a sequestered jury of his peers to find Leland Frazier guilty NOT of murder but of Voluntary Manslaughter.

From the Greene County Circuit Court Law Book, pp. 116-117
“We the Jury find the prisoner is guilty of Voluntary Manslaughter, and fixed his term of imprisonment to four years in the penitentiary house, Nov. 20, 1860.” And thereupon it being demanded of him, if anything for himself he had or knew to say why the Court should not now proceed to pronounce judgment against him according to law, and nothing being offered or alleged in delay of judgment, It is considered by the Court, that the said Leland Shiflett commonly called Leland Frazier be imprisoned in the public jail and penitentiary house of this Commonwealth for the space of four years, the period of the Jurors in their verdict ascertained. And the prisoner is remanded to jail.”

Voluntary Manslaughter suggests Leland killed his sister’s husband in the heat of the moment, that there had been no premeditation.  Perhaps Burton had even provoked the incident.  I wish I knew what they were fighting over.
