Sepia Saturday challenges bloggers to share family
history through old photographs.
This week’s Sepia Saturday photo of a woman, child, and
dog is a good match with several photos in my collection, most notably this
one:
Have I ever mentioned that this woman, this dog, and
these children are driving me crazy because I cannot determine how they are
related to me? Oh, I have? What –
numerous times, TOO MANY TIMES, you say? Well, let me say it one more time.
This woman, this dog, and these children are driving me
crazy!
I know the older child was John Jr. and his little sister
was known as “Bob.” The dog was appropriately called “Cutey.”

The general appearance of the woman suggests she was a
sister of my great-grandmother Mary Theresa Sheehan Killeen Walsh. However, the
children’s names and ages do not match those of any of Mary Theresa’s sisters’
families. Maybe the woman was her
sister-in-law, wife of her brother John Sheehan, and maybe John Jr. and “Bob”
were grandchildren.

This photo seems to be three-generations. If I am
correct, the daughter married somebody named John. So far, that is just a
theory while I plow through all the John Sheehans in New York City looking for
a match.
Apparently little “Cutey” had been a part of the family a
long time. Her first appearance in a photo was in 1915.

I guess that’s Cutey. I suppose it could be Cutey’s
mother. Or Cutey’s grandmother.
Oh for heaven’s sake. I can barely trace my own family
tree. Cutey’s descendants will have to take care of their own.

ReplyDeleteHaving photos of people you know are related to your family in some way, but don't know which way or have any clue to their names is so frustrating. Luckily you do have a couple of first names at least, and even the name of the dog. And "Cutie" does appear to be just that! :)

ReplyDeletePerfection! It takes dogged determination to dig up the old bones of family relations. But I think you're on the right scent, Wendy, just keep on the hunt.
