Wordless Wednesday: Men of the Eastwind #6

Wordless Wednesday is a daily prompt at Geneabloggers that asks family historians to create a post in which the main focus is a photograph or image.

Unknown sailors on USCGC Eastwind 1946 or 47 http://jollettetc.blogspot.com

When my dad was stationed aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Eastwind in 1946-47, he took pictures of his shipmates during tours to Thule, Greenland but didn’t provide names.  Maybe the family of these sailors will find my blog and share their story.

  1. Was there anything there to shoot? It makes me sad that we didn't ask Daddy more about those pictures.

    1. I vaguely remember seeing the scrapbook one time. He should have brought it out.

    1. And then what? I hope they cozied up to a nice Eskimo family who might want the skin or even the meat. I doubt the ship's cook was gung ho to fry up some caribou.

    2. On page 18 of http://www.filegate.net/eastwind.pdf there is an account of the crew shooting a Musk Oxen and then eating Musk Oxen steaks!

    3. Oh my -- there it is. They could indeed have eaten an ox.

  4. All these pictures have certainly been great shots--something that family would just love to have. Keep it up, Wendy...hopefully someone will stumble upon this series of yours and match up these faces with some names...and maybe even share some stories.
