This week’s Sepia Saturday prompt suggests many
possibilities ranging from beaches to trains to aquariums to running away. The image of the well-dressed gentleman
making his way across the dunes made me recall this photo:
As one who can’t tolerate sand in her shoes, I am
perplexed that these men would trudge out toward the water in their Sunday
best.
Since I have no story to accompany this photo, I’ll do
like Agnes Whoever and wave good-bye for this week.
Please visit Sepia Saturday for more stories and photos of beaches and escapes.

I agree with not wanting to get sand inbetween my toes, yuk! The gentlemen are all dressed up for some sort of occasion, Agnes is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI love Agnes -- wish I knew who she was.
DeleteLovely old beach photographs, very appropriate to the theme.
ReplyDeleteLove Agnes's firty (at the time) bathing suit!
ReplyDeleteIsn't she something?!
DeleteAnd here's a wave across the water from me to you too, Wendy. Have a good day.
ReplyDeleteSame to you!
DeleteI bet those dapper guys tip toed out on the beach just for the photo, and they do look dapper...especially that flat top hair guy. Speaking of hair and hats...that Agnes sure was sporting a cool bathing cap and her suit is a hoot. Wonder if she got in the water with those yards of wet material to drag you out to sea.
ReplyDeleteForgot to tell you on your Blogiversary post....Love your new header. Well done!

Mr. Flat Top could do a little do-whop ditty in the 1950s, I think.
DeleteWhat a pity you don't have an ID for the pals.
ReplyDeleteTell me -- my aunt Helen didn't give me much to go on.
DeleteShort but sweet! The two guys look as if they have been out celebrating somewhere. It did strike me that men;s fashion did not change much, as the photograph had a look of the 1950' or 60's about it and I was surprised to see iit was taken decades earlier.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought about that but you're right -- that crewcut makes that fellow look like he could be from the 50s or 60s.
DeleteI love walking in the sand and feeling the sand between my toes..........but don't like sand in shoes. The shoes have to come off!
ReplyDeleteI think it's the mix of sand and water that really bothers me.
DeleteBy the way, I really like the changes that you have made to your blog. Looking good :)
DeleteLove walking barefoot in the sand. I have some photos of my parents at the beach in Ireland in the late 40s and they always seem to be dressed up.
ReplyDeleteI also have many photos of women in beautiful summery dresses, but I guess there wasn't a lot of choice. Probably shorts hadn't been invented and pants were for snow.
DeleteAgnes looks like she is scattering something in the wind.
ReplyDeleteI can see that ~
DeleteIt always surprises me to see the older photos, usually pre-~1920s, with people fully-clothed at the beach. And not just at the beach, but on the beach, as if for swimming. These men don't look like they intend to swim, but one does wonder why they went to the beach in Sunday best. Agnes is wearing a sweet swim suit and cap.
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew the story. Were there NO casual clothes back then??
DeleteI love the beach, the ocean spray, salty and plastered on my skin along with sand in my shoes :) I grew up in So Cal and whenever I need to "unstress" I close my eyes and lay in the warm sand on some beach and listen to the waves. (Done a whole lot this summer.) I do so love your beach photos because I want to dress like those ladies :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Long Weekend!!
Oh but you're an athlete used to sweat and grit.
DeleteIn the last photo she is just all about happiness, and enjoying her day at the beach. The gents appear so much like Dapper Dan, and handsome for sure!
ReplyDeleteJudging by the number of beach photos my aunt Helen had, she must have LOVED the beach.
DeleteI hate getting sand between my toes or shoes. I would never venture out on a beach in my Sunday best.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos Wendy!
ReplyDeleteThanks ~
DeleteI'm always perplexed by people who go to the beach dressed up but a great photo...wonder why they were there.
ReplyDeleteYes, I wonder too. The faces don't look like any of the other men in the rest of the beach photos, so I wonder if they were visitors who just wandered by and struck up a conversation.
DeleteI’d forgotten that people used to go to the beach fully kitted out in their suits, I think the one I have of my dad is because we’d just arrived on holiday; it’s still strange though.
ReplyDeleteDry cleaning had to be expensive. Doing laundry and ironing had to be laborious. You'd think people would worry about their clothes getting messed up.
DeleteThey don't look like they built any sand castles, so maybe they excaped the sand.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I don't think they threw any frisbees either.
