52 Ancestors: #33 - John Frank RUCKER

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small has issued a challenge:  write one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor.  It can be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem – anything that focuses on one ancestor.

For many years the Rucker Society has argued over whether my 3X great-grandfather John Frank RUCKER was the son of Jarvis or Angus.  Traditional wisdom favored Jarvis.  However, common sense and the DAR won out and gave the prize to Angus.

John Frank was the fifth of six children born to Angus and Jane Allen Rucker.  Unfortunately, his name never appears in a census record, to my knowledge.  Born about 1794, John Frank was likely the 16-25 year old male living in his parents’ home in Madison County, Virginia in 1810.  In 1820, he might have been in the household of his bride’s family, the Jarrells.

Or perhaps he missed the census that year because he was off defending the country during and following the War of 1812.  There is a service record for John F.

Pension Record John F. Rucker and Mary Rucker

as well as a record of enlistment in Madison County.

John F. Rucker enlisted under Captain Mann P. Lomax.  John Frank was 26; he had brown hair,
hazel eyes, and dark complexion.  He was a farmer from Madison County.

John Frank enlisted in 1819 and was discharged in 1821.  Inspection Returns indicate he served
at Fort Monroe (Hampton, VA) and Fort Norfolk (Norfolk, VA).

How interesting to learn that John Frank had hazel eyes and served at Fort Norfolk, just a short drive through the tunnel from where I grew up.

In 1830, he and his wife Mary were probably the 30-39 year old male and female living with Angus in Madison.

John Frank, Mary, and the kids must have moved to Rockingham County soon after.  John Frank died in Rockingham about 1839, as proven by the Abstracts of Guardian Bonds:

"15 July 1839, Guardian Bonds, Rockingham Co., Va.,
Parent, John F. Rucker; Orphans, Onslow, Angeline,
and Eliza; Guardian Jared Powell, Bond was $2,000,
bondsmen, John Cook and Honorias Powell."

Two children were not mentioned, probably because they were already married and on their own.  One was Sarah Jane, and the other was Franklin Rucker, my great-great grandfather.

Sadly, where John Frank is buried is unknown, although it is probable that he lies in the Baugher Cemetery in Beldor, Rockingham County, Virginia, along with his wife Mary Jarrell Rucker.

52 Ancestors: #22 - Mary Polly DAVIS Baugher

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story Too Small has issued a challenge:  write one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor.  It can be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem – anything that focuses on one ancestor.

Mary Polly DAVIS is my third great grandaunt, daughter of Leonard and Mary Marshall Davis.  She was born in Albemarle County, Virginia about 1805.  Polly was a teenager when her parents relocated to Rockingham County where she met Jacob Baugher, son of Daniel and Anna Maria Moyer Baugher, whom she married on January 2, 1823.

Like their neighbors, the Baughers were a farm family with lots of children - twelve according to census records and family research.  Sometime in the mid 1850s, Jacob and Polly bid adieu to family and friends in Rockingham and moved to Nodaway County in northwest Missouri.

Why, I don’t know.  Jacob was too young to have been a volunteer in the War of 1812; therefore, it is not likely he was claiming bounty land.  Maybe they had heard about the cheap land and fertile soil in the Platte Region.  Annexed just a few years before in 1837, Platte represented the western fringe of settlement.   There was plenty of land to go around.

How the Baughers traveled is unknown.  The addition of a couple Kentucky-born spouses might suggest that they crossed by way of the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky like so many other pioneers had done.  They might even have spent some time in Kentucky before continuing west into Missouri.  But a daughter-in-law from Ohio shows it is also possible that they took the National Road through Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois into northern Missouri.  More research is needed.

When the Baughers traveled can be determined more easily.  Jacob and Polly were enumerated in their native Rockingham County, Virginia in 1850 and then in Missouri in 1860.  There was a wedding in Nodaway County, Missouri in 1856 and a grandchild born there in 1859.

Polly Davis Baugher’s family spread far and wide.  When she and Jacob left Virginia, they left behind several adult children who had their own families, families that stayed put in Rockingham County.  Their descendents can still be found right there to this day.  Of the Baugher children who relocated to Missouri, some stayed there while one headed to Oregon, another to Indian Territory (today Oklahoma), and still another to California.

A to Z April Challenge: R is for Reefa

This is Day 18 of the A to Z April Challenge.  My theme is women with unusual names although I must cheat now and then or I’ll have a name and no story.

is for Reefa Enis Baugher.  She was my third cousin once removed.  Her parents were Mary Byrd Duff and James Asa Baugher.  She descended through the numerous Baughers and Ruckers that had lived in the Beldor/Sandy Bottom area of Rockingham County, Virginia since the early 1800s.  Reefa was the fourth of six children, the first and last of whom died shortly after birth.

But little Reefa was not long for the world either.  She was born in July 1899, and she died fourteen years later in November 1913.

Baugher Family about 1905
3 Generations about 1905
Left to Right:  Reefa, Grandma Mary Duff, Ruby,
Mary Byrd Duff Baugher, Brinton, and Bernice

Untimely death darkened the Baugher doorstep far too many times:  her father in 1905, her mother in 1915, leaving behind 3 minor children.

A to Z April Challenge: A is for Armentrout, B is for Baugher

I am participating in the A to Z April Challenge blog hop.  My theme is my family history.  My approach will be to briefly discuss a person or family group using the letter of the day.  Right now I’m a day behind.  That's why there are 2 posts rolled into 1.

is for Armentrout.  My 3G grandmother Mary Ann Armentrout was born in Rockingham County, Virginia about 1795 and died in 1870.  She was the second wife of my 3G grandfather Fielding Jollett.  They had the following children:

Lydia Catherine Jollett (26 Apr 1830 - )

John Wesley Jollett (6 Apr 1832 Rockingham Co, VA – 18 Oct 1916 Rockingham Co, VA)

Henry Harvey Jollett (26 Jul 1834 Rockingham Co, VA – 1850 Rockingham Co, VA)

James Franklin Jollett (17 Nov 1836 Rockingham Co, VA – 3 Jun 1930 Augusta Co, VA)

Lucretia Ann Jollett (18 Sep 1838 Rockingham Co, VA – 31 Dec 1911 Rockingham Co, VA)

Very little is known about Mary Ann, probably because many records for Rockingham County were burned during the Civil War.  One burned deed survives, confirming her father was John Armentrout.  However, other key information is lost in the ashes.  John Armentrout was a common name, so it is nearly impossible to pinpoint this specific family.  Her name appears on several deeds after the war selling land to the adult children.

Supposedly Mary Ann is buried in the graveyard near Brown Memorial United  Church of Christ in McGaheysville, Rockingham County.  When she and her family attended church it was the German Reformed Church known as Peaked Mountain Church.  Many of the graves are marked with stones; some are engraved in German; some are unmarked.  Still others are under the new elementary school.

The Armentrouts are very well researched, but this particular family is just a footnote in the published history of Armentrouts.  Researching this family will be a major project for some other time.

is for Baugher.  Since I am already behind, I decided I’d write about the Baughers because there isn’t much to say.  The Baugher in particular is Eliza F. Rucker Baugher.  Eliza (1829 – 8 Feb 1900 Rockingham Co, Virginia) was the daughter of John Frank Rucker and Mary P. Jarrell.  The Baugher connection might hold the key to one of the major Rucker debates:  who was John Frank’s father?  Angus or Jarvis?  It’ll take some time to connect the dots, but one strong argument in favor of Angus is that Eliza Baugher and her husband Asa named one of their sons Angus.  The older Angus was a Revolutionary War hero – certainly worth honoring.
