Wordless Wednesday: Button Button

Wordless Wednesday is a daily prompt at Geneabloggers that asks family historians to create a post in which the main focus is a photograph or image.

Among the many photos left behind by my great aunt Helen Killeen Parker is this photo button.

Photo Button among pictures belonging to Helen Killeen Parker

According to Brett Payne over at Photo-Sleuth, photo buttons were especially popular in the early 1900s.  Many had a pin backing so that the button could be worn.  However, this one is a metal plate 6” across, so most likely it was not worn but displayed on a stand.

Aunt Helen was born in 1903, so it is quite likely a photo of her.  However, it is just as likely to be someone else, one of her sisters perhaps, since she might have inherited her mother’s or sisters’ things upon their passing.

    1. Sadly, the one person most likely to know died many many years ago. I can't think of anyone living who would know any more than I do. :-(

    1. With that haircut and dress, she definitely earned cuteness points.

  5. What a cool photo pin! I have some photo post cards but so does everyone else. I have photo pins of my kids every year that they played soccer- and I even have one of me from when I played my senior year of high school...in my old classroom I had them on the board above my desk....all 30 of them!
    Happy Thursday :)

    1. That's right -- I had forgotten about all those school and sports photo buttons. I'm sure I never ordered any for my kids. But a collection of 30 has to make an impact.
